Contemporary
Contemporary dance is a fusion of various dance & movement styles that has evolved over the years to combine elements from Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Hip-Hop, traditional African dancing, Yoga and much more. There are various techniques such as Cunningham, Graham, Limon & Release.
Classes are generally quite structured with set exercises to warm you up, improve on general strength & flexibility and work on technique. But we will also explore floor work, emotional expression, improvisation, breathing, experimentation, among other things. Contemporary is a very freeing genre.
All classes are inclusive, welcoming & friendly, with an emphasis made on supporting each other, building a community and having FUN.
Suitable for ANYONE & EVERYONE over 18yrs. You do not need any previous experience but if you do have prior training then we will make sure to still challenge you.
What to wear/bring
You should wear clothes you can move freely in, but as we use the floor quite a lot you also want to stay quite covered, so we’d recommend tracksuit trousers/leggings & a t-shirt/vest/blouse. Regarding footwear, bare feet or socks.
After class social
We always go for a drink or food after class. Everyone is welcome & encouraged to join!
We understand socialising can be scary, especially with new people, but it’s a big part of what we’re about, and we will do everything we can to make you feel welcome & included. We also find that people who socialise with their class, not only enjoy the classes more but also improve faster.
